ATM Safety Tips
Using ATMs should feel easy and safe, just like stopping by your local Forward Bank location. But it’s still important to stay alert and protect yourself from potential risks. At Forward Bank, we’re here to help our neighbors across Wisconsin and Minnesota stay secure and avoid any trouble no matter where they access an ATM.
By following these straightforward tips, you can safeguard your ATM transactions and reduce the risk of fraud or theft.
- Choose your ATM wisely: Whenever possible, use ATMs located at a bank or in well-lit, busy areas. These locations are generally safer and less likely to be targeted by criminals compared to isolated or standalone machines.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Before approaching the ATM, take a moment to look around. If something feels off—whether it’s a suspicious person or an unfamiliar situation—trust your instincts and find another machine. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
- Protect your ATM card and PIN: Keep your ATM card secure, just like you would cash or credit cards. Store it safely and notify your bank immediately if it’s lost or stolen. Never write down your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or share it with anyone. Shield the keypad with your hand or body when entering your PIN to protect it from prying eyes or hidden cameras. If someone is standing too close, don’t hesitate to ask them to give you some space.
- Inspect the ATM for tampering: Before using an ATM, visually inspect it for any signs of tampering or skimming devices. Look for sticky residue, scratches, damaged or crooked pieces, loose attachments on the card slot, or unusual resistance when pressing the keypad. If anything looks suspicious, avoid using the machine and report it to Forward Bank immediately.
- Keep your card and cash secure: Have your ATM card ready in your hand before approaching the ATM. After completing your transaction, quickly put your card and cash away before leaving. Don’t count your money or handle your wallet while standing at the machine—wait until you are in a safe, secure location.
- Take precautions when using an ATM at night: If using an ATM at night, park close in a well-lit area, and consider bringing another person with you. If the lights at the ATM aren’t working or visibility is blocked by overgrown shrubbery, choose another location and notify your bank.
- Be cautious with drive-up ATMs: When using a drive-up ATM, ensure all passenger windows are rolled up, and doors are locked. If you leave your car to walk to the ATM, lock your car and keep your keys with you.
- Report suspicious activity: If you notice anything suspicious—such as unfamiliar devices attached to the machine or unusual activity around the ATM—avoid using it and report your concerns to Forward Bank immediately. Quick reporting helps us take steps to secure your safety and protect others.
